Just chillin’ on my last day on the island of Mykonos

Dear Travel, You have made life colorful, sensual, vibrant and meaningful for me. You have shared with me the most exquisite flavors in the kitchens of Thailand and France. You’ve taught me the most magnificent history lessons in Egypt and India. You’ve treated me to the most mind boggling shopping experiences in Greece and Morocco.

You’ve exposed me to the most decadent life experiences in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I’ve never thought of myself as adventurous, but your allure was enough to even get me to go horseback riding in Mexico, and camel trekking and glamping in the Sahara Desert, not once but twice. I’ve met the most welcoming and loving people in all of these places, and more. For all of this, I have you to thank.

Living a dream come true at the Taj Majal in Agra, India

I will admit this time apart had me thinking I was okay, that I had experienced you enough to last me for years to come if need be.

Lies.

Just the other day we had to evacuate from our home due to a nearby brush fire. For the first time in months, I grabbed our passports. I grabbed our Global Entry cards. I grabbed my favorite carry on bag up which I purchased during my last trip to Paris. Those were the physical valuables. Those few items and my memories of our times together went with us as we fled the neighborhood and drove past the raging flames. Fortunately the fire was soon contained. After returning home I had a chance to think about it. I didn’t grab my favorite 10 inch knife, although I’m a chef. I didn’t grab any of my Moroccan or French fragrances, although I’m a collector. But the travel essentials, they were the most valuable to me.

Then I started to miss using those items. I thought about the awesome feeling of walking into the VIP lounge at the airport and enjoying a lovely meal and a glass of champagne before the flight. I thought of the ride from the airport to the hotel, and arriving at the hotel to be greeted warm smiles and sometimes a cool towel depending on the location. I started to miss every detail of you, travel. I started to miss my life.

We’ve been together wayyyy too long to just stop. And now, we’ve been apart far too long to keep going like this.

For now I have photos and memories. But soon, my love, I will have you. #deartravel
