In 2 weeks I’ll have the pleasure of attending, as an official blogger, the Gluten & Allergen Free Expo in San Francisco.  Having been gluten free for a little less than a year now, I’m looking forward to discovering all of the delightful delectables I can get my teeth into.  I won’t say that I miss bread, and cookies, and cake, thanks to Mariposa gluten free bakeshop.  But I’m always interested in making the acquaintance of a new dark chocolate cupcake, or chocolate chunk cookie.  Being a gluten free foodie blogger, I’m just overjoyed to have the expo within commuting distance for 2 days.  Woohoo!!!

Last year I attended a gluten free educational seminar and was a bit annoyed to hear a fellow dietitian ask if African American’s could have intolerance to gluten.  I’m not sure where this rumor started, and I wish it were true, but we can be intolerant just like any one else.  I am living proof. Don’t ask me why I was living with abdominal cramping, bloating, and increasing memory loss over the last 15 years or so.  When you live with disease, you learn to just live with it until it becomes your “normal”.  Especially when you seek diagnosis only to be told “your colon looks completely healthy”.  I wonder if I had been Caucasian would the doctor have suspected gluten was the culprit.  I’m just sayin’.

My discovery that gluten was causing me problems was VERY accidental.  I’ll tell you all about it in my Google Hangout on Monday, Feburary 4 at 6pm Pacific.  Just join the Soul Food Therapy Circle in Google Plus, and be on time, as space is limited.

If you’re experiencing any of the above mentioned symptoms, or brain fog, chest pain, heart burn, or a big round belly with no baby in it, you may want to consider that we, Black folk, DO sometimes suffer from celiac disease, or more often, gluten intolerance.  It’s a sad fact, but it’s not as sad as going along ignorant and suffering. And whether you know it or not, if you’re lactose intolerant you may really want to find out if you’re gluten intolerant too, as they tend to go hand in hand.  Intolerant or not, I hope to see you at the Gluten & Allergen Free Expo, or in the hangout, or both.

Do you or someone you know follow a gluten free diet?  If so, what prompted the change in diet?  I’d love to know.
