It’s already April and I still hadn’t figured out my fitness routine for the year, until now.

A couple of years ago I decided to go, literally, from bed to half marathon. I think I ran about 7 half marathons that year. I vowed to find another fitness activity to get into, but it didn’t happen. Then I pushed myself to try the new kickboxing place not too far from me, I Love Kickboxing. And I’m not going to lie and say I love it yet, but I do believe I’m in the right place and on the right track.

I heard about this place late last year. But I couldn’t seem to drag my lazy tail over there to check it out. Instead my daughter and I tried at home yoga with this little old lady who comes on PBS. That little old lady tried to kill us. We lasted about 2 weeks.

Then my hubby came home with an I Love Kickboxing flyer and asked us to check it out. Bonus – he offered to pay for the classes if we tried it and liked it. So of course that was motivation enough to try it.

So last weekend I get to the place and the music is thumpin’ – and it sounds like they found my playlist. Ciara “One, Two, Step”, Lloyd “Get it Shawty” and I’m like yeah, I’m gonna like this place.

My daughter and I jumped in with our new pink gloves and commenced to huffing and puffing and sweating for the next 60 minutes. I can’t speak for my daughter, but it’s the music that really kept me going. So at the end of class we’re sitting on the floor having just finished our ab work, and one of the owners or managers comes over to me and sits down on the floor with me to talk about membership. And that’s when it happened.

Back when I was pushing myself to run half marathons there was one song that would give me life, even when I thought I couldn’t take another step. And right at the moment that she went in for her sales pitch, I heard my song. ‘Til I Collapse, Eminem and Nate Dogg. I didn’t mean to be rude, but I told the lady she needn’t say any more. I just needed to hear my song, and I was sold.

So we just completed week one of the next 51 weeks of kickboxing. Hubby’s treat.

No, it was not easy. But just like anything else I’ve wanted, I just have to kick my own behind to get it. I’m a little behind schedule this year, but the way these classes kick my butt, I’ll be whipped into shape in no time. Especially if they keep peeking into my playlist.

What’s your fitness routine like these days? Have you tried anything new lately? I’d love to learn about it in the comments below. That way I can cheer you on, because I know it’s not easy staying fly.
